THE ROYAL GOLD CUP
This unique example of a 14th century
secular cup has had an eventful history.
After being some time in the possession of
the Kings of France, it was brought to
England and remained part of the Royal
treasure until 1604, when James I presented
it to the Constable of Castile. The latter
gave the Cup to a Convent near Burgos
where it remained until 1883. It was then
sold in Paris and, eventually coming to
England again, is now in the British
Museum. The basse-taille enamelling re-
presents the legend of St. Agnes. The cup
now stands about nine inches high, two
rings having been added; one bearing roses
in Tudor times and another, with an in-
scription, in 1710.
