Coin History
Production of proofs at the Philadelphia Mint occurred every year of the Motto Liberty Eagle series (1866-1907).  Mintages range from a low of 20 pieces for the 1874, 1875, 1877 and 1878 to a "high" of 120 coins for the 1900.  In all cases, the number of coins extant is considerably less than the number struck, partially because many specimens failed to sell by year's end and partially because many of those that did find buyers were later spent or otherwise lost to future generations of collectors.  Any proof Liberty Eagle must be considered a rare and important find in today's market, as well as the kind of coin that would serve as a centerpiece in any numismatic holding.
