THE HYDE ABBEY CROSIER
The Crosier or Pastoral Staff was first used
in Gaul or Spain in the 4th or 5th centuries
and its use spread throughout the Christian
churches of the world. It is the ensign
presented to a bishop at his consecration
and it is also carried by abbots when they
are empowered to do so. The beautiful
Crosier illustrated was found during exca-
vations on the site of Hyde Abbey, Win-
chester in 1788. Probably a Crosier of one
of the Abbots of Hyde, it is an important
specimen of early 13th century work. The
head is of copper hammered and gilt.
The Crook is formed of an eight-sided volute
decorated with conventional foliage and
fruit of the vine. This Crosier is now in the
Victoria and Albert Museum.
