BOOTHAM BAR AND YORK MINSTER
Ebraucus did build a city north of Humber,
which from his own name he called Kaer
Ebrauc, that ts, the City of Ebraucus, about
the time that David ruled in Judaea; thus
does Geoffrey of Monmouth quaintly describe
the origin of the ancient city of York.
Modern historians, preferring evidence to
romance, tell us that the site was occupied
by a tribe called the Brigantes, and that
subsequently the Romans named it Ebora-
cum, and made it their most important
centre in N. Britain. The Minster, or
Cathedral of St. Peter, is one of the noblest
of our cathedrals. The transepts, the
oldest portion of the present building with
the exception of the crypt, represent the
Early English style at its best. Several
of the ancient gates still remain, Bootham
Bar being the main entrance from the north.
