CAVALIER
This name was given to the
supporters of Charles I in
the English Civil Wars of
I642-49, though the name
really means a horseman.
The Cavaliers comprised
the County gentry, and
Country folk of Anglican
faith, who believed in the
the " divine right of
established Monarchy and
Kings." Though defeated
in the wars, they eventu-
ally succeeded through the
ill-conceived Dictatorship
of Oliver Cromwell.
