FURNESS ABBEY LANCASHIRE
The ruins of the Abbey of Furness stand
in a wooded valley, the quiet and repose of
which are in marked contrast to the noise
and bustle of the busy foundries of Barrow.
The Abbey was founded in 1127 by Bene-
dictine monks under the auspices of Stephen,
Count of Boulogne, afterwards King of
England. The brotherhood subsequently
joined the Cistercians, and the Abbey be-
came very wealthy. Furness Abbey, which
was partly dismantled after the Dissolution,
now belongs to the Duke of Devonshire.
Here, where, of havoc tired and rash undoing,
Man left this Structure to become Times prey,
A soothing spirit follows in the way ,
That Nature takes, her counter-work purswing.
And, on the mouldered walls, how bright, how gay,
The flowers in pearly dews thetr bloom renewing
