THE ROYAL STATE COACH
The Royal State Coach which has been
described as 'the most superb carriage
ever built' was designed by Sir William
Chambers, who also designed the Chinese
pagoda in Kew Gardens. It was finished
in 1762, having cost over 7,500 pounds. Four
large tritons support the body of the coach
by means of braces, the whole being
twenty-four feet long, twelve feet high and
weighing four tons. The paintings on the
door and panels were executed by Cipriani
and the entire carriage is elaborately
ornamented with carved work richly gilt.
During the latter half of the 19th century
the coach was rarely seen, but on the
accession of Edward VII it was again put
in order and is now used by Their Majesties
on State occasions.
