GOG AND MAGOG
The wooden figures of the giants Gog and
Magog are over fourteen feet in height and
stand in separate corners of the Minstrels
Gallery in the Guildhall, London, where they
were erected in 1708. They took the place
of two figures of wickerwork and paste-
board which at one time were carried in the
Lord Mayors show. Gog is a barbarian
with bow and arrows and a spiked ball on
a chain attached to a long pole. Magog is
in the dress of a Roman soldier with shield
and spear. The origin of the fables con-
cerning Gog and Magog is obscure but many
connect these figures with the legend which
tells of the founding of London by adven-
turous refugees from Troy.
