HADDON HALL DERBYSHIRE
Haddon Hall, the most perfect of baronial
mansions, is picturesquely situated on a
limestone rock overlooking the Wye, near
Bakewell. The manor was granted by
William the Conqueror to William Peverel,
the Peveril of the Peak of Scotts novel.
Subsequently the property passed by mar-
riage to the Vernons, the last of whom, Sir
George Vernon, who died in 1361, was
known as the King of the Peak because
of his princely hospitality. His daughter
Dorothy marned John Manners, son of the
Earl of Rutland, and so Haddon Passed to
the Rutland family, to whom it still belongs.
The mansion may be termed an epitome of
English architecture from the time of the
Normans to the early 17th century, the
banqueting-hall and the kitchen containing
a number of remarkable contemporary fittings.
