WESTMINSTER ABBEY LONDON
Under its original name of
the isle of Thorn-ea, West-
minster was a place of
importance before London
existed, a Saxon king
having built a monastery
on the present abbey site.
Edward the Confessor
(1042-66) rebuilt this monas-
tery on a scale of great
magnificence and called it
West Minster. Henry III
(1216-72) began the present
building.
