Kenilworth Castle was established by Geoffrey de Clinton,
Chamberlain to Henry I, in about 1122. It was once
surrounded by a great lake. It was besieged in 1266 and has held
royal prisoners and was the site of many Knight jousting
tournaments. Queen Elizabeth I was a visitor to the castle where
she stayed for nineteen days as a guest of Robert the Dudley ,
the Earl of Liecester
Many English kings contributed to the construction of
Kenilworth Castle. King John added the outer curtain wall and
towers. In the late 14th century the castle was owned by John of
Gaunt, who began its conversion from a fortress into a palace by
adding the Great Hall. This process continued under Robert
Dudley, Earl of Leicester in the 1570s, who added the Leicester
building, a large residential block overlooking the lake.
