MODEL WARSHIPS ON THE SERPENTINE 1814
August 1st, 1814, being " the
centenary of the accession of
the illustrious family of Bruns-
wick to the throne of this king-
dom, and the anniversary of the
battle of the Nile," a grand
national jubilee " was celebra-
ted in all the parks. Hyde Park
was hung with Chinese lanterns,
and on the Serpentine a pic-
turesque fleet of miniature
battleships wag moored. In the
evening this fleet waged a fierce
and spectacular "battle," which
ended in the defeat and burn-
ing of the French ships. With
the French fleet were two
American ships sailing under
the Stripes. These boats were
captured, and the British flag
hoisted over the American.
