THE LINDISFARNE GOSPELS
This beautiful-manuscript which is also
known as the Durham Book and the Book
of St. Cuthbert, contains the four gospels in
the Latin Vulgate version. It was written
about the end of the 7th century by Ead-
frith, Bishop of Lindisfarne, in honour of
St. Cuthbert, his predecessor in the see.
The manuscript is richly ornamented and
is one of the most interesting examples of the
Irish style of illumination. A gloss (i.e. a
translation written in between the lines) was
added in Anglo-Saxon during the 10th
century by Aldred who is supposed to have
been the Bishop of Durham of that name.
The manuscript is now in the British Museum.
