AN ENGLISH TAU CROSS
The Tau Cross (from the Greek letter T)
was a form of the pastoral staff and was
used by Bishops and Abbots of the Western
church up to the 12th century. It is still
used in some of the Eastern churches.
Ivory has been a favourite material for
sculpture from the earliest times and this
Anglo-Saxon specimen is typical of the
work produced in England during the 10th
and 11th centuries. Many of the beautiful
carvings of this period were inspired by the
famous Winchester school of illumination,
and the work is characterized by the same
individuality found in the drawings in
contemporary manuscripts.
