THE PEGASUS VASE
The famous Pegasus Vase is eighteen inches
in height and is one of the finest productions,
of Wedgwood in the Jasper type of body
which he perfected after years of laborious
work and experiment. The reliefs are the
work of John Flaxman, an artist who shares
the fame of his master and whose great
ability is particularly evident in the delicacy
of these exquisite low reliefs. The subject
of the frieze of figures (named by Wedgwood
'The Apotheosis of Homer' is taken from
a Greek vase. The Pegasus Vase was pre-
sented to the British Museum in 1786 by
Josiah Wedgwood as a work of which he
was proud.
