THE PHOENIX JEWEL
In the Middle-Ages pendants were generally
of an amuletic or religious type. In the
Renaissance period however, cameos and
medals were frequently used, and the pen-
dant known as the Phoenix Jewel is one of
the latter type. It consists of a gold wreath -
of roses enamelled red and white and en-
circling a bust of Queen Elizabeth, cut from
the Phoenix Badge of 1574. The phoenix
appears on the reverse; this type of jewel
was the predecessor of the beautiful jewelled
frames containing cameo or miniatures
which were worn throughout the 17th
century. The Phoenix Jewd is in the
British Museum.
