ROYAL MACE CHARLES II
The Royal Mace is one of the most important pieces in the Crown Jewels. If the Mace is not
present, Parliament cannot meet nor can any laws be passed. The Mace in Parliament is the
symbol of royal authority. The House of Commons mace is a silver gilt ornamental club of
about five feet in length, dating from the reign of Charles II.
The mace is a large, golden staff carried by the Serjeant-at-Arms, an officer of the House who
is responsible for ensuring order is maintained in the lobbies and galleries.
