THE CORONATION CHAIR
The famous Jacobs Stone is supposed
to be the stone upon which the patriarch
slept in the plain of Luz. This stone according
to legend is the one now in the Coronation
Chair (also known as St. Edward's Chair).
It was brought from Scotland by Edward I
in 1240 and placed in Westminster Abbey.
The Scottish King Kenneth had enclosed
the stone-in a wooden chair of which the
present chair is a copy. It was originally
gilt and inlaid with glass. All English
monarchs since the 13th century with the
exception of Mary I, have been crowned
upon this stone in Westminster Abbey.
