BRITISH LEGENDS AND FAIRY TALES
THE DUMB TWIN BROTHERS
Angus, Scotland
A serf on Lord Crawford's estate had twin sons, both dumb, and marred with spots on face and
body. Ugly as they were, lord Crawford held them in high favour, for they were great hunters. The
rumour gained ground, however, that they killed his deer and sheep, and sold them for their own
profit. Being caught red-handed, they were hanged - but at their death their mother uttered a
dreadful curse. Before the sun set that day, Lady Crawford died; her husband survived her for
some months, only to be torn to pieces by two wolves while out hunting. It was popularly believed
that the spirits of the brothers had taken possession of the wolves.
