BRITISH LEGENDS AND FAIRY TALES
THE GOOD NEIGHBOUR
Edinburgh, Lothian
Sir Walter Scott, in his Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border, records the meeting of Sir Godfrey
Macculloch with his "Good Neighbour". "I live there," explained the little Green Man, indicating
the earth beneath Sir Godfrey's house - "and your new-fangled drains make an awful mess of my
best room." "It shall be altered," said Sir Godfrey, and he saw that it was. Years of unrest
followed and Sir Godfrey, having unluckily killed a man, was being escorted to his execution on
the Castle Hill of Edinburgh when the little Green Man on his palfrey swooped with the dash of a
falcon, scattered the guard, and bore away his old friend.
