THE GREAT EXHIBITION 1851
The first great exhibition of
arts and industries was held in
Hyde Park in 1851 under the
presidency of the Prince Con-
sort. Exhibits from all the
principal countries of the world
were housed in a building of
glass and steel covering twenty
acres of ground. This building,
which cost over 193,000 pounds, was
rebuilt (with additions) at Syd-
enham, and still exists as the
Crystal Palace. The exhibition
marked an epoch, not only in
the development of a new in-
ternational outlook in crafts-
manship and commerce, but as
the culmination of that great
phase of earnest and confident
endeavour which is known as
the early Victorian Period.
