Gloucestersire
In a clearing of a Gloucestershire forest once stood a little mound, as high as a man, and
possessed of a magical quality. Anyone wearied with the hunt or with journeying had but to leave
his companions, climb the mound lone, and say, "I thirst." Immediately a cup-bearer would
appear and present a large, gold-mounted horn, richly decorated with gems, and filled with a
drink delicious as nectar. One day a knight of ill manners, having so refreshed himself, neglected
to return the horn. But when the Earl of Gloucester learned of the theft, he sentenced the offender
to death, and presented the horn to the King.
