    Description

I believe this sinister-looking mask is from the Bambara (or Bamana) of Mali in North Africa.  Possibly a hyena mask, its narrow erect ears are like those on many Chiwarra antelope headdresses from the same culture   It is hand carved from hardwood and smeared with different shades of mud ochres.  The tips of the ears have been eaten away and hollowed out by insects (which are long gone).  The ears have dried reddish mud
inside, and the cheek bones each have raised three dimensional geometric openwork just under the eyes.  An old used mask with a nice patina,  13" x 6 1/4" x 5".
