DOMESDAY BOOK
The great survey of England made for
William the Conqueror was completed in
1086 and probably soon afterwards Domes-
day Book was compiled from the returns
of the legati or royal officers who held the
enquiry in each county. The object of the
survey was to record the extent and values
of land for taxes and other dues. It was
said that from this assessment there was
no appeal and this gave use to the popular
name 'Domesday. The volumes now
have a modern binding and are seen lying
on the top of the ancient Domesday Chest
in which they have been preserved. Domes-
day Book is now in the Public Record Office.
