WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL HAMPSHIRE
Ninety-nine years before Rome was built,
Winchester is said to have been founded by
the legendary Hudibras. More reliable
historians trace its origin to the Caer Gwent
("white city or market town) of the
Celts, which became an important Roman-
British town, Venta Belgarum. Later it
was the capital of Wessex and the seat of
a bishop. The Norman Bishop Walkelin
began to rebuild the cathedral in 1079, and
in 1093 the monks came with the highest exulta-
tion and glory from the old minster to the new.
So strong was Walkelins building that
much still remains. The magnificent Per-
pendicular nave was the work of William of
ykeham and his predecessor Bishop Eding-
ton, who declined the see of Canterbury with
the quaint phrase If Canterbury is the
higher rack, Winchester is the better manger.
